From the Memoir:
I persisted, saying those performances reminded me of postwar Japanese toys with their brilliant strange colors and charm, surreal: Parker’s harshness and true soulfulness above and through and under all that syrup had been startling, mind-blowing, at least for me, and the end result was, I thought, unintentionally new. Bill [Holman] told me my response was ignorant. He didn’t listen, but interrupted like men do, and said, asserting, bored, the obvious, “But think how much better it would have been if they had had a good arranger!” Meaning him, I guessed. I think I was talking aesthetics and he was talking music.
